December 1, 2019:  First Sunday of Advent

PRELUDE

WELCOME

*ADVENT SONG:  Now It’s Time to Light the Candle, v. 1

Now it’s time to light the candle,
Soon God’s promise will be here.
Young and old we wait together
For the Savior drawing near.

Light will overcome the darkness:
See the hope the Christ Child brings.

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING

Let us pray together:

Light of the World, we thank you for the hope you have brought to our lives.  We continue to hope for change in our own lives and in your world.  We wait in hope for war to end, for violence to cease.  We wait for your people to live with more love. In the warmth of your Light, we wait for hope to be revealed more fully. We wait together by the light of this candle, praying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.  Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

*OPENING HYMN  #168  Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, always with us, always coming:  We confess that we do not know how to prepare for your Advent.  We have forgotten how to hope in miracles; we have ignored the promise of your kingdom; we get distracted by the busyness of this season.  Forgive us, God.  Help us to hear your promise, strengthen our faith in our waiting, and make us ready for Jesus’ coming.  Amen.
